Street Scene Tapestry (Artist Signed)

A woven pictorial tapestry depicting an 18th century European street vignette, animated by figures in period dress within and architectural passageway. The composition reflects the tradition of genre scenes-capturing everyday life with attention to movement, gesture, and social interaction.

Executed in a jacquard woven textile, the piece represents a revival-style production rather than an early handwoven Aubusson example. Such works were produced in the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from earlier French decorative arts while making these aesthetics more accessible for interior use.

The presence of a woven signature, Jacques Alonso Perez (as observed in the lower right corner), suggests a workshop or designer attribution associated with decorative textile production of the period, referencing earlier European artistic traditions.

The palette is restrained and harmonious, composed of war neutrals, muted terracotta tones, and soft creams. The lower fringe remains in tact in a silk gold thread, contributing to the overall decorative completeness of the piece.

CURATORIAL NOTE

While not of early handwoven origin, this piece reflects the continued appreciation of

European genre imagery within decorative textile production.

Works of this kind were created to bring the aesthetic of classical French tapestry into accessible interior settings,

maintaining visual richness without the labor inteseive methods of traditional ateliers.
