Prelude

Before he left for war, he was required to sign a document. A Last Will and Testament. It did not describe distribution. It read more like a promise…to take care of her if he did not return. In that moment a responsibility was assumed.

It appeared to be a standard requirement, something every soldier was asked to sign before being shipped out. What he signed was more than a formality. It marked a responsibility.

The Steward

Today, Family Offices search for the Steward. In 1944, the United States Army assigned one. Not through structure but through responsibility. In that moment the Patriarch was formed.

Marriage

Marriage, not in estate planning, but lived between two people far from one another. He was in France and at home, life had already begun. A child was born and the foundation of a family was already taking shape.

Continuation

He signed his Will in 1944. In 2024, I was named Executrix/Administrator of his estate. The responsibility continued…not as expected but as he intended.

It was folded then and 80 years later, I found it in the same shape hidden away among all of his war time documents. Nothing lost…only carried forward.
